Reliance Industries rallied 4 percent after better than-expected earnings in the quarter ended September 2015. Infosys, Hindalco, Sun Pharma, SBI, Vedanta, Wipro and Lupin were other gainers in early trade.
Reliance Industries shares jumped around 5 per cent to top the 50-share Nifty index. The strong buying in the counter was triggered by RIL's Q2. The company had posted record profit in the September quarter after market hours on Friday.
IT major HCL Tech slipped over 3 per cent in morning trade.
India's fourth largest outsourcer reported a net profit of Rs 1,726 crore on sales of Rs 10,097 crore in Q1, meeting estimates. But, sequential revenue growth in constant currency was just 1.2 per cent, disappointing investors.
The market has opened in red as the Sensex is down 98.35 points at 27859.15. The Nifty is down 20.80 points at 8438.15. About 298 shares have advanced, 176 shares declined, and 80 shares are unchanged. Wipro is up 3 percent while Sun Pharma, Infosys, Dr Reddy's Labs and Cipla are top gainers in the Sensex. ITC is down over 2 percent. SBI, Vedanta, Tata Power and Bajaj Auto are among the major laggards.

The market has opened on a strong note. The Sensex is up 142.02 points or 0.5 percent at 28032.15, and the Nifty is up 48.50 points or 0.6 percent at 8478.20. About 395 shares have advanced, 67 shares declined, and 65 shares are unchanged.
BHEL, HDFC Bank, Sun Pharma, TCS and Tata Steel are top gainers in the Sensex. Among the losers are Dr Reddy's Labs, GAIL, M&M and Bharti Airtel.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose as much as 164 points in trade on Thursday to reclaim its crucial psychological level of 28000, led by gains in HDFC, TCS, HDFC BankBSE 0.71 %, Axis Bank and Coal India.
The 50-share Nifty index surged over 50 points in opening trade to reclaim its crucial level of 8450, supported by gains in auto, banks, consumer durables, power, and realty stocks.

The S&P BSE Sensex started on a cautious note on Friday largely in line with other Asian markets. The fall in the index was led by losses in HDFC Bank, HDFC, Cipla, ICICI Bank and L&T.
Tracking the momentum, the 50-share Nifty index also started on a muted note weighed down by losses in auto, banks, consumer durable and metal stocks.
